At Free State Caskets the goal is to offer affordable burial containers that are biodegradable, sturdy, reverent, and simple. Plain, unfinished pine is my primary material. But don’t confuse simplicity with l
esser quality. These caskets are lovingly crafted and will easily support 300 pounds.
My interest in building caskets came about when my parents were pre-planning their funeral arrangements and decided on natural burial; no embalming, no vault, just an uncomplicated, no frills, yet dignified burial in a plain pine casket. After they acquired their plots in a green cemetery (alongside my wife and myself and some very dear friends), they asked me to go ahead and build their caskets so that no major decisions will need to be made when their time comes. Of course, I agreed to do so and discovered how fulfilling this work could be. Along the way, I also learned that many other people were looking for the same kind of caskets as well as cremation urns.
The standard casket is $550. Interior dimensions are 14” deep x 25 ½” wide x 72”-80” long. Custom sizing is available. There is no interior lining. Caskets constructed with no metal fasteners are $700-$750. Prices do not include delivery except for local orders.
Most caskets are made to order, so please allow 5-7 business days for delivery. Please call if your situation is more urgent and I will attempt to accommodate if possible.
Plain pine cremation urns are also available; pricing ranges from $100 – $150. Price does not include shipping.
Casket delivery is available within 250 miles of Lawrence, KS; please call or email for a cost quote. Delivery within 50 miles of my shop near Baldwin City, KS is free.
